With this easy formula, you define your goals in a way that you can and want to achieve them and afterwards see what you have achieved. The <strong>acronym SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound<\/strong>. We will explain what the inventor Peter Drucker meant by that down below. SMART goals also help with procrastination. If you want to \u201cget better in your studies\u201d, you are probably (and rightfully so) quite lost. What means better? In which courses? How much better? When is that goal achieved? To avoid these kinds of questions and feeling of cluelessness, it\u2019s important to set <strong>specific, clear and explicit<\/strong> goals.<\/p>\n<h3>M \u2013 Measurable<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s really motivating to see what we already have achieved. It\u2019s this great feeling of seeing that your already at slide 19 out of 21 in your lecture or seeing that you only have to read the last 10 pages out of 120 pages of mandatory books. That\u2019s exactly why you need <strong>measurable<\/strong> goals. On the one hand you see your progress and on the other hand you can celebrate your accomplishments.<\/p>\n<h3>A \u2013 Achievable<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s great that you strive for the best, but completely unrealistic goals are going to discourage you. To get 60 ECTS with straight As in one semester, is unfortunately one of those unrealistic goals that only stress and make you give up. That\u2019s why your goals can be <strong>demanding, but not unachievable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>R \u2013 Relevant<\/h3>\n<p>Your goals have to be <strong>relevant to you<\/strong>, meaning that you really want to achieve these goals. If your parents demand straight As, but your content with Bs and Cs, then you\u2019ll hardly find the motivation to study more. That\u2019s why you have to define your goals.<\/p>\n<h3>T \u2013 Time-bound<\/h3>\n<p>Everybody knows this: If you have to get up early because you have a class at 8 am, it\u2019s easier to get up than when class starts at 10am. Time-bound goals motivate us because we keep in mind that we don\u2019t have time forever. You\u2019ll immediately notice which are more motivating.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u201cI want to improve my French.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now let\u2019s make this a SMART goal:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<u>Until June 2022<\/u>, I will spend <u>one hour every week reading<\/u> a French book and <u>5 minutes daily to study<\/u> vocabulary because I will fly <u>to France on vacation<\/u> in July.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>\u201cI want to do more sports.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The SMART goal looks like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<u>This year<\/u> I will <u>go running for one hour every week<\/u> and will improve my pace <u>by 30 seconds <\/u>until <u>October 2022<\/u> because I will run a <u>half marathon<\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>\u201cI want to study better for my exams.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Applying the SMART method, the goal is:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the <u>summer semester<\/u>, I will start studying for each exam <u>three weeks in advance<\/u> and study <u>with my notes, lecture materials and mandatory reading<\/u> because I want to <u>improve my grade from a D to a C.<\/u>\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t want to write my seminar papers at the last moment.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is how we make this goal SMART:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the <u>summer semester<\/u> I will make a <u>timetable at the beginning<\/u> of the seminar and <u>plan one hour each week to work <\/u>on my paper, so that I am done with <u>my first draft by the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> of June<\/u> and have three weeks to correct and hand it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>\u201cI will read the mandatory reading for my lectures.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here is the SMART version:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the <u>beginning of the semester<\/u>, I will <u>write down everything<\/u> I have to read and <u>read 20 pages each week,<\/u> so that I am done <u>two weeks before the exam<\/u> and have enough time to study the content.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='hr av-67ddri-939d1151fce71b060d2f0663923ad01a hr-short  avia-builder-el-29  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  hr-center'><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jy4ae4sq-f5c2a1847752e6904de183e2b2b39e3a '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The SMART method is actually really easy and with these examples you\u2019ll hopefully be able to apply them to your own goals.
