Especially on hot days, everybody is looking for a way to cool down. Here is our refreshing answer: This cool article will show you five free swimming spots and five swimming pools in Vienna that deliver much-needed refreshment.

Sometimes you don’t need a big budget for a refreshing, water adventure on hot days. Try these free swimming spots in Vienna!

1. Asperner Lake

As the main feature of the future-oriented urban planning project “Seestadt”, the Asperner Lake is perfect for relaxation and refreshment. Riding your bike, going for walks, swimming and more is waiting for you in and around this green recreational area! Swimming is only allowed on the Southern shore of the lake!

2. CopaBeach

Get the feeling of being on vacation right in the city at the CopaBeach. A sandy beach, delicious food, swimming and green sunbathing lawns are everything you need on hot summer days!

3. Kaiserwasser

Spacious sunbathing lawns with giant trees right at the Alte Donau sound like dream, right? The recreational area at the Kaiserwasser is perfect for relaxed days in the shadows and in nature, providing a cool down at the Alte Donau.

4. Wienerberg pond

The recreational area Wienerberg means relaxation and nature in the outskirts of the city. The giant area not only offers a pond for swimming, but also hiking paths, running trails, golf and tennis courts as well as soccer fields and much more!

This wild swimming spot is truly an insider tip, right next to the green Prater. After cooling down, you can complement your visit with walks in nature, an adrenaline rush in Prater or a snack in one of the many restaurants!

1. Schafbergbad

This public swimming centre in the 18th district offers everything you need for a successful day at the swimming centre: different pools, sports areas and restaurants! There is something for everyone!

The Stadionbad is the perfect location for an active and athletic day in the water! The wave pool provides fun and action every full hour and the water slide and diving platform bring you an adrenaline rush! Of course, you can also calmly swim a few laps and then relax on the sunbathing lawn!

The Gänsehäufel is one of the most famous public swimming centres in Vienna. It is located on a green isle with tons of trees on the Alte Donau, a calm branch of the Danube. It is known for its “typically Viennese guests” and offers something for everybody! You can choose if you want to swim in the Danube or in a swimming pool. There is also a nude beach area!

Can you swim in the Danube?

Yes, you can swim in the Danube. However, swimming is forbidden around bridges, ports and watergates. Moreover, you should not swim too far out because currents or vortexes can be dangerous.

Is swimming in the Alte Donau dangerous?

In principle, swimming is safe in this area, since the Alte Donau is a calm body of water. Just be careful and keep a distance to swans and other birds that live here and protect their habitat.
